Itzal aktiboa prize for young contemporary artists 2013
Five finalists have been selected in the competition for the Itzal aktiboa Contemporary Art Prize for the work of a young artist active in the Basque Country.
They are: Verónica Domingo, from Las Arenas-Getxo (Bizkaia); Anne-Laure Garicoix, from Saint Jean Pied de Port (Basse Navarre); María Jiménez Moreno, from Zizur Mayor (Navarre); Bérenger Laymond, from Bidart (Labourd); and Thomas Loyatho, from Hasparren (Labourd).
Their works will be exhibited in three locations in Saint Jean Pied de Port from 4 October to 3 November 2013. The winner will be announced during the course of the exhibition.
Verónica Domingo will show two works on pape, produced using the Monoprint process. Entitled "Entre los pliegues de la luz", they are inspired by the poems of Pablo González de Langarika.
Anne-Laure Garicoix willshow a painting entitled "Les Flamandes de Salvadora", in which ambivalent hints of landscape and people merge to create a disquieting yet simultaneously comforting atmosphere of darkness and light.
María Jiménez Moreno will show an installation called "Ofelia" which combines physical reality with visual metaphors in a disquisition about the position of women throughout the world, drawing inspiration from the water-lilies that surround Hamlet’s dead lover in John Everett Millais’s famous pre-Raphaelite painting.
Bérenger Laymond will show an installation called "En attendant mieux" which presents an imaginative example of alternative architecture as a utopian solution to contemporary problems of rampant urbanisation.
Thomas Loyatho will show an oil painting entitled "Arrasortzea", whose deliberately unfocused depiction of a human figure engaged in some unidentified activity illustrates the way in which our brains process the barrage of images to which we are subjected in today’s hyper information society.
The competition is being organised in collaboration with the Basque Cultural Institute and the town of Saint Jean Pied de Port. Two other prizes will also be awarded: the Prix de la Ville de Saint Jean Pied de Port, of 800 euros, and the Prix Nautilus/Lanzarote, consisting of a one week artist's residency in Lanzarote,
